826 loves Ms. Hacker

Our warmest congratulations to Ms. Tobi Hacker, 826 Valencia's most recent teacher of the month! Ms. Hacker teaches Language Arts and Social Studies to seventh graders at James Lick Middle School. With high standards and a nurturing teaching style, Ms. Hacker has inspired students and teachers alike to never settle and always strive for more.

Ms. Hacker brims with teaching talent and dedication. Her classes are known for being rigorous and well-scaffolded, and her assignments innovative and engaging. Her genuinely nurturing style results in strong, trusting relationships with her students and a "focused and respectful learning environment, where high expectations are met daily."

Beyond her deep commitment to her students, Ms. Hacker also demonstrates the importance of collaborating with colleagues on the development of a strong curriculum and exciting lessons. When not offering in-services on classroom management and engagement strategies, she often mentors new teachers, debriefing lessons and inviting them to observe her class. As a member of the district's Middle School Leadership Initiative, she has contributed to developing testing standards in writing assessment, always insisting on the best standards for her students. Yet it doesn't end here. Ms. Hacker is also a sponsor of the school's yearbook, which adds up to many extra hours of service per week! We are so fortunate to have a teacher of Tobi Hacker's caliber in our neighborhood.

Congratulations again to this very deserving teacher!

The story of success at James Lick Middle School is many faceted.

Academics is first and the school has wonderful, inspiring teachers. The facility is aging but adequate. The students are fantastic.

Baseball, Basketball, Track, School plays, the Soccer champs of 07. But I am most familiar with the Rock Bands.

In 2006, the music teacher quit. The principal went searching and found that Blue Bear School of Music wanted to help.

Blue Bear sent Richard Storbeck to teach ROCK AND ROLL. With only a month of practice, they played to rave reviews in front of the student body. Two weeks after that, they played for KFOG. Two weeks after that they went to Dolby Labs to play a fund raiser for Blue Bear. (That is where the photo was taken). The Rock and Roll groups have been a total success.

The singer has moved on to San Francisco School of the Arts and the guitar players will graduate from James Lick in the spring of '08.

It is a fine school, with a totally dedicated faculty and staff. The kids are great. Come join us.
